About this sheet

New York and its harbor seen from the Hudson's western shore at Weehawken, an original hand-colored aquatint with engraving after Ambroise-Louis Garneray, dated 1834. The bilingual title reads "Vue de New York, Prise de Weahawk" and "A View of New-York, taken from Weahawk", with "Garneray pinxt." at lower left.

A large leaning tree frames the left of the composition. Beneath it a couple in fashionable dress walk along a path with a small dog, while a party of figures picnics on the grass at the right. Across the broad river the low skyline of the city is marked by church spires and a domed building, with sailing vessels of every size crowded on the water and a wooded shore beyond. The color is applied by hand in soft greens, blues and warm sky tones.

Garneray (1783 to 1857) was a French marine and landscape painter. His views of American ports were issued in Paris for a French audience and show New York as a busy harbor town at the southern end of Manhattan, before the city grew northward.
