About this sheet
The head waters of the Juniata River in the Alleghany Mountains of Pennsylvania, an original steel engraving of about 1830, lettered "Head Waters of the Juniata, Alleghany Mountains, Pennsylvania" in the border below the view. The imprint at the foot is that of J. and F. Tallis of London.
A rough log bridge crosses a rocky torrent at the center, with a lone figure standing on it holding a long pole. The river tumbles over rocks beneath, and dense woodland rises on both banks to a distant wooded mountain under a cloudy sky.
The view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage. A small vignette at the top shows a seated Native American figure. In the lower corners are two historical scenes: at the left a group in period dress under a tree, apparently the treaty of William Penn with the Native Americans, and at the right a monument with two figures standing before it, in Philadelphia.
