About this sheet

Horseshoe Falls at Niagara, titled "The Horse Shoe Fall, Niagara, with the Tower", an original steel engraving by R. Brandard after W.H. Bartlett, published in London for the proprietors by Geo. Virtue around 1840. The title is also given in French, German and Dutch beneath the image, the Dutch version reading "De Paardenhoef (Niagara-Val); het Belvedere".

The view looks across the rapids toward the curved crest of the falls, with a stone tower standing at the brink on a rocky spur, reached by a wooden walkway at the left. Spray rises in a white cloud from the plunge, and tree-covered cliffs and a few distant buildings line the far bank. In the foreground, a group of figures sits on the bank in pine and brush, looking at the falls, with others standing at the lower right.

William Henry Bartlett was an English topographical artist who traveled in North America in the 1830s, and his views, engraved in steel by artists like Brandard, were published by George Virtue in London in the following years.
