About this sheet
A street in Albany, New York, in an original lithograph after a drawing by Tirpenne, published in France around 1840. The sheet is printed in black and gray tones, and the lettering at the lower left reads "Tirpenne lith." The old description gives the titles "Vue en Albany" and "Intérieur de la ville d'Albany".
A large tree shades the left side of a wide, unpaved street, where a mounted rider in a top hat passes a group of townspeople in the long coats and bonnets of the period. At the right stands a brick house with a stepped gable and a tall chimney, a reminder of the city's Dutch colonial origins, and a woman and child sit by its doorstep. A lamp post and a pump stand in the middle of the street, a church spire rises at the far left, and a pair of dogs run across the foreground.
Albany, the capital of New York, stood at the head of Hudson River navigation and at the eastern end of the Erie Canal, which made it a busy commercial center in these years.
