Loeboe Dalam Canal, Sumatra – Kleingrothe Photogravure c.1900
An original early 20th-century photogravure by renowned photographer C.J. Kleingrothe, showcasing the tranquil Loeboe Dalam canal on the island of Sumatra (present-day Indonesia). Produced ca. 1900 during the height of plantation development under the Dutch East Indies, this image captures a peaceful yet historically important waterway surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.
Kleingrothe’s work is a highly respected visual record of colonial-era Sumatra, documenting infrastructure, agriculture, and daily life. This view is artistically composed with the winding canal leading the eye into the distance — a rare example of his more atmospheric landscape studies.
Printed by the famous O. Felsing atelier in Berlin, one of the leading European photogravure houses of the period. The sheet remains rich in tone with sharp detail, providing both documentary and decorative appeal.
