About this sheet
Chile, Argentina and Bolivia in 1884, an original engraved map titled "Chili, The Argentine Republic, & Bolivia", prepared by the Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in the new and revised edition of Black's General Atlas of the World. The sheet is numbered 50 at the upper right and colored by hand in pink, yellow, green and other tints.
Chile runs as a narrow pink band along the Pacific coast, with its towns, ports and capes lettered down to the southern islands. The Andes divide it from the Argentine Republic, shown in yellow across the broad plains to the Atlantic, where the Río de la Plata opens at the right. Bolivia fills the top of the sheet in green. Patagonia is lettered across the south, and rivers, towns, railways and routes are drawn over the settled central provinces.
The map was drawn just after the War of the Pacific, in which Chile took coastal territory from Bolivia and Peru, and the Argentine army's campaigns into Patagonia in the late 1870s had extended the nation's southern frontier.
