What the condition grades mean

Excellent: Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good: Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good: Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.
Fair: Clear faults such as staining, tears or repairs, priced to match.

Condition

The map is in good condition for its age, with light toning and minor foxing along the edges. Small tears are present at the fold lines, but there are no significant losses. The colors remain vivid, and the paper is intact with slight wear.

About this sheet

Johnson's Indiana, a map published by Johnson and Ward in 1864, steel engraved with the counties outlined and tinted in pink and green and set within the ornamental chain border of Johnson's atlas. The title is lettered at the lower right, with the publisher's name beneath it.

The state fills the tall sheet, with the southern shore of Lake Michigan cut at the upper left and the Ohio River forming the winding southern boundary against Kentucky. County lines, towns, railroads, canals and rivers are drawn in detail, with the neighboring parts of Illinois to the west, Ohio to the east and Michigan to the north. Indianapolis stands near the center, with the railroads radiating from it across the state.

Indiana was already crossed by an extensive railway network by the 1860s, and the map records it county by county.
