Vintage Lake Tahoe Bird’s-Eye View Pictorial Map by Gerald A. Eddy, circa 1945
Original vintage pictorial map of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, painted by Gerald A. Eddy and published by the Lake Tahoe Sierra Association in Tahoe City, California, circa 1945.
This exceptionally attractive bird’s-eye view presents Lake Tahoe in dramatic three-dimensional perspective, surrounded by the mountainous landscape of California and Nevada. The map extends west toward Truckee and Reno and east toward Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville, with roads, settlements, mountain peaks, ski areas, golf courses, lakes and recreational destinations carefully identified.
The decorative title panel reads “Lake Tahoe Sierra Association – Tahoe City, California” and promotes the region with the memorable claims “No Poison Oak – No Rattlesnakes – No Harmful Insects.” Gerald A. Eddy is credited as painter in the lower right corner.
The reverse is particularly appealing and remains an important part of the original piece. It contains colorful period tourism graphics, photographs, visitor information, a road map and a smaller map of Lake Tahoe, together with the original pictorial folding covers. It provides a wonderful glimpse of Lake Tahoe as a mid-20th-century American vacation destination.
