Original antique engraved map of the western coast of Asia Minor and the eastern Aegean islands, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas accompanying Jean-Jacques Barthélemy’s celebrated Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce.
Titled “Les Côtes de l’Asie Mineure depuis Cume jusqu’à Rhodes,” the map extends southward along the ancient coast of Asia Minor from Cyme to Rhodes, encompassing the historically important regions of Ionia, Lydia and Caria.
The map is exceptionally rich in classical sites. Among the ancient cities identified are Ephesus, Miletus, Smyrna, Halicarnassus, Sardis, Priene, Magnesia and Cnidus, many of which played major roles in the political, commercial and cultural history of the ancient Greek world.
The offshore islands are shown in considerable detail and include Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Icaria, Patmos, Cos and Rhodes, together with numerous smaller islands of the eastern Aegean and the Sporades.
Of particular interest is Ephesus, one of the great cities of antiquity and home to the celebrated Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Halicarnassus was similarly famous for the Mausoleum of Mausolus, another of the Seven Wonders.
Finely engraved mountain ranges, rivers, coastlines, islands and ancient settlements give the map considerable visual interest, while the elongated vertical format makes it particularly decorative when framed.

Condition:
Good antique condition with general age toning, scattered foxing and occasional small stains and marks. Old mounting or tape residue is visible along the upper margin, with some discoloration and foxing in the outer margins. The engraved map remains strong, clear and highly detailed. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
