Antique Engraving Cocos Island, Maritime Scene, Manesson Mallet, 1683
A highly atmospheric and finely engraved 17th-century maritime scene depicting the island of Cocos, published in Paris in 1683 by the French cartographer and engineer Alain Manesson Mallet. This evocative composition originates from his celebrated work Description de l’Univers, one of the most influential illustrated geographical publications of the late 17th century.
The engraving presents a vivid coastal view labeled “I. Cocos” and “I. des Traittres,” combining topographical imagination with maritime activity. Dominating the foreground is a large European sailing vessel at anchor, surrounded by smaller boats and figures engaged in coastal interaction. The scene conveys a moment of encounter—likely inspired by early European exploration narratives—where local inhabitants approach the anchored ship in canoes, adding a dynamic and human element to the composition.
