Original Antique Print of Yuracaré Fishing in Peru by Dureau, c.1840
An original antique hand-coloured lithograph titled "Pêche des Yuracarès (Pérou)", depicting members of the Yuracaré people fishing in the tropical forests of Peru. The print was published in Paris during the mid-nineteenth century by Dufour, Mulat et Boulanger.
The scene portrays Indigenous fishermen standing in a shallow river using long spears or fishing poles, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, towering palms and dense rainforest. Figures gathered along the riverbank observe the activity, creating a peaceful yet vivid depiction of daily life in the Amazonian region.
The Yuracaré are an Indigenous people traditionally inhabiting the forests and river systems of the upper Amazon basin. Nineteenth-century travel publications frequently illustrated their customs and environment, reflecting the growing European fascination with the peoples and landscapes of South America.
The composition was drawn and engraved by Dureau, whose finely executed landscapes are known for their careful observation of tropical scenery. The subtle original hand colouring enhances the richness of the vegetation and the tranquil atmosphere of the river landscape.
This print formed part of a French series illustrating the geography, peoples and natural history of the world, intended to educate as well as inspire travellers and collectors.
