This charming hand-colored engraving depicts a common dolphin resting upon a Mediterranean shoreline, accompanied by figures in Ottoman dress and a distant coastal cityscape. The exotic setting reflects nineteenth-century European fascination with both marine life and the wider world.
Created by Édouard Traviès and published by Furne in Paris around 1840, the composition combines natural history illustration with picturesque ethnographic detail. The subtle palette and graceful draftsmanship make the work particularly decorative.
