La Pêche du Requin (Shark Fishing), Hand-Colored Engraving, 1840
A superb maritime engraving depicting sailors pursuing a large shark alongside a majestic sailing vessel under gathering skies. The scene conveys the adventurous spirit of nineteenth-century ocean exploration and commercial seafaring.
After a design by Édouard Traviès, this engraving was published by Furne in Paris around 1840 and hand-colored at the time of publication. The elegant rendering of the ship and the atmospheric treatment of the sea make this one of the most visually compelling plates of the series.
