About this sheet
A portrait of the poet and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine, a lithograph by Le Gout-Gérard published by Goupil, Vibert & Cie, Paris, lettered "A. de Lamartine, Représentant du Peuple (Loire)" with his facsimile signature at the lower right. The old description places it between about 1850 and 1855; no firm date appears on the sheet, and the series number 1 is printed at the lower center.
Lamartine is shown seated in a carved and gilded armchair, his head resting on one hand and his eyes looking away from the viewer. He wears a long buttoned coat with a high collar, and an open volume and papers lie on the table beside him, with a book whose spine is lettered with the names of his works. The figure is drawn in soft gray crayon tones against an almost bare background, with the face worked in the finest detail.
The caption names him as a representative of the people for the Loire, a reminder of his role in the French Revolution of 1848. The foot of the sheet lists the publishers in Paris, London (Gambart & Co., 25 Berners Street) and New York (Goupil, Vibert & Co., Broadway).
