Antique engraving portrait of King Louis XIII of France, circa XVII century
This finely detailed portrait engraving depicts King Louis XIII of France and Navarre (1601–1643), one of the central figures of early modern French monarchy. The oval cartouche inscription reads “Ludovicus XIII Dei Gratia Galliae Franciae et Navarrae Rex Christianissimus, Natus Anno MDCI XXVII Septembris”, identifying him as Louis XIII, “Most Christian King of France and Navarre, born in the year 1601, on the 27th of September.”
Louis XIII ascended the throne in 1610 after the assassination of his father, Henry IV, and reigned until 1643. His rule is remembered for the growing strength of the French monarchy and the political authority exercised by his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. Together, they worked to centralize power, curb the influence of the nobility, and establish France as a dominant power in Europe.
The portrait presents Louis XIII in regal attire with a rich fur-trimmed cloak, a lace-edged ruff, and the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the highest order of chivalry in France. Condition report:
Good impression, but tight margins, mounted on old paper. Minor age toning and a few light foxing spots in the margin. Small paper loss in the lower right margin near the plate edge. No modern repairs.

Best suited to a traditional presentation with a cream or off-white mount and a gilt or dark wood frame, which will highlight the portrait’s rich contrast. A deep blue or burgundy wall color enhances its stately character.
