This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Jan Steen, one of the most beloved painters of the Dutch Golden Age, known for his lively and humorous depictions of everyday life. Born in 1626 in Leiden, Steen was a master of genre scenes filled with character, color, and narrative. His work often reflected moral lessons through depictions of chaos, celebration, and domestic mischief, now famously referred to in the Dutch expression a Jan Steen household.

In this relaxed studio portrait, Steen sits before a large canvas, pipe in hand, dressed casually and surrounded by the tools of his trade. His confident yet slightly amused expression suggests a moment of pause in the midst of artistic creation. The setting is filled with painterly detail, including palettes, sketches, and framed works on the wall behind him, giving a charming insight into the artist’s world.
