About this sheet
This lithographed portrait shows a young man at half length, facing the viewer, with thick dark curling hair, side whiskers and a calm, direct expression. He wears a double breasted coat with high puffed shoulders, a waistcoat, a pale shirt front and a dark stock fastened with a pin, all in the height of fashion of the 1830s, and the figure is set against a soft cloud of crayon tone.
Below the portrait the sheet is lettered "Hansi." in an elaborate copperplate script. At lower left the lithograph is signed in the stone "J. B. Clarot" with the date "837" written within a looped flourish, and at lower right it is lettered "Ged. b. Mansfeld & Comp.", that is, printed by Mansfeld and Company, the Vienna lithographic press.
Johann Baptist Clarot (1797 to 1854) was one of the most accomplished portrait lithographers of Biedermeier Vienna. He drew actors, singers, musicians, nobles and private sitters for the city's flourishing print trade, and his portraits are admired for their crisp drawing of the face and their elegant handling of costume. Hansi is an affectionate Austrian form of the name Johann.
Lithography, invented by Alois Senefelder in Munich in 1796, was the favorite medium for the portrait print in Vienna in these years, because the artist drew directly on the stone and the print kept all the softness of a chalk drawing. Clarot uses the crayon with great delicacy here, modeling the face in fine grain and setting the dark coat against the pale linen at the throat.
A Biedermeier portrait like this hangs well in a study, a bedroom or a group of early nineteenth century portraits.
Condition: Good condition for its age. Light toning; small chip and soft creasing at the lower right corner; small spot and pencil number in the lower left margin. The image is clean. Please review the images for further condition details.
