About this sheet
A finely engraved portrait lettered "Therese, Erzherzogin von Oestreich." (Therese, Archduchess of Austria), showing a young woman half length, turned slightly to the left and looking out at the viewer with a gentle smile. Her dark hair is parted in the center, smoothed over the ears and gathered into a high knot on the crown, dressed with a spray of white roses. She wears a low cut gown with wide lace trimmed sleeves caught with bows, a rose at the bodice and a fur stole about her shoulders, set against a softly clouded sky within a ruled border. The credits read "Nach der Natur gez. v. Prof. Ender." (drawn from life by Professor Ender) at lower left and "Gesto. v. Fz. Stöber" (engraved by Franz Stöber) at lower right.
Both artists were leading figures of Biedermeier Vienna. Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793 to 1854) was a painter and portraitist who taught at the Vienna Academy and drew many members of the imperial family, and Franz Xaver Stöber (1795 to 1858) was one of the most accomplished Viennese engravers of portraits and almanac plates of the period.
The high knot of hair, the wide sleeves and the fur trimmed neckline are the fashion of the middle eighteen thirties. That points to Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria (1816 to 1867), called Therese, the daughter of Archduke Charles, the victor of Aspern. In 1837 she married Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and became Queen of Naples, so a portrait that styles her simply as archduchess was most probably issued shortly before that marriage.
The engraving is of real quality: the face and shoulders are modeled in delicate stipple, the lace and fur rendered with great finesse, and the soft gray tones of the sky frame the head beautifully. It is a lovely Viennese portrait for collectors of Habsburg history, Biedermeier fashion or royal portraiture.
Condition: Good condition for its age. Toning, small chips to the left edge, pencil notes and a small spot to the lower left margin and a faint stain at the lower right corner. Please review the images for further condition details.
