Hawaiian Islanders, Portraits and Cultural Scenes – Three Small Engravings, Paris 1836
This attractive group of three small engravings depicting the Hawaiian Islands (Îles Hawaï) was published in Paris in 1836 and reflects the growing European fascination with the peoples and cultures of the Pacific during the early nineteenth century. Produced after the era of Captain James Cook's voyages and subsequent explorations, these prints offered European audiences visual impressions of Hawaiian life, appearance, customs, and social traditions at a time when the islands remained largely unfamiliar to the Western world.
The first engraving, Portrait de trois Indigènes, presents three Hawaiian islanders in carefully observed bust-length portraits. Their hairstyles, facial features, and draped garments reflect contemporary European attempts to document the appearance and identity of Pacific peoples. The second plate, Intérieur de la maison d’un Chef, depicts the interior of a Hawaiian chief's residence.
