Dirk Sweelinck – Dutch Baroque Organist and Composer, 19th-Century Lithograph
This richly detailed 19th-century hand-colored lithograph presents Dirk Janszoon Sweelinck, one of the leading figures in Dutch early Baroque music. Although the print reads Dirk Sweelinck, it likely refers to Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621), a renowned organist and composer of the Amsterdam Oude Kerk. His innovative keyboard works and choral compositions bridged the Renaissance and early Baroque periods, earning him the title Orpheus of Amsterdam.
In the scene, Sweelinck is shown seated at a richly carved pipe organ, focused intently as he plays. Behind him stands a young singer or student, reading from sheet music—possibly referencing Sweelinck’s role as an influential teacher to many later composers. The warm interior, period attire, and musical setting convey the harmony and intellect of Dutch musical life in the seventeenth century.
The lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. The hand-applied coloring and graceful composition make this a standout piece for collectors of musical history and early Dutch art.
