About this sheet

A gelatin silver print of a general store on the American frontier, circa 1900. The photograph shows a two-story clapboard building with a tall false front. Its sign, painted across the ground floor, reads "J.A. Wickett, General Merchandise." Two men in dark clothing and hats stand in front of the shop, one at the door and the other beside the window, which is crowded with goods. A wooden boardwalk runs along the front, and the street is bare, unpaved earth.

In the distance at the left a second building stands on the edge of the open plain, and fence posts line the foreground. The image has the plain, dry look of a small prairie town in the first years of its settlement. Such studio-quality photographs were often made at the request of the shopkeeper himself, as a record of the new business.

The print is mounted on a thin card with a dark border, in warm sepia tones.
