About this sheet
Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset, in an engraved portrait from Thomas Birch's The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, published in London by John and Paul Knapton. The plate is lettered "Edward Sackville Earl of Dorset Lord Chamberlain" around the oval frame, with "A. Vandyke Eques pinx." at lower left and "G. Vertue Sculp." at lower right, and a line recording the portrait in the possession of the Duke of Dorset.
Sackville is shown half length within a stone oval hung with drapery and a garland of flowers. He has curled hair, a mustache and pointed beard, a wide lace collar and armor with a ribbon and badge at the chest. On the ledge below lie a staff and crossed keys, the insignia of his office as Lord Chamberlain, with a plumed helmet to the right and a coronet and coat of arms at lower left.
Sackville (1591 to 17 July 1652) was an English courtier, soldier and politician who became Earl of Dorset in 1624, was involved in the colonization of North America, and supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War.
