The Exchange Hall in Lyon – 18th Century Hand-Colored Engraving by Daumont
This impressive 18th-century hand-colored engraving depicts the Exchange Hall (Bourse or Loge des Changes) in Lyon, France, an important center of commerce and architecture during the reign of Louis XV. Designed in the grand neoclassical style, the building served as the meeting place for merchants, bankers, and traders, reflecting Lyon’s status as one of Europe’s leading trading cities in the 1700s. The engraving was published in Paris by Daumont, a celebrated printmaker and publisher on Rue St. Martin, known for his beautifully detailed and vividly colored vues d’optique (perspective views).
The scene is alive with figures dressed in the elegant fashions of the 18th century. Groups of merchants and gentlemen are shown deep in conversation, while others walk the courtyard or ascend the steps of the grand façade. The architecture is rendered with great precision—its classical columns, arched portico, and sculptural details emphasizing balance and proportion. Above, an inscription honors Louis XV and the period of his reign, celebrating the civic prosperity of Lyon.
Daumont’s optical engravings were highly sought after in the 18th century, designed for viewing through a zograscope to create an illusion of depth and realism. This example stands out for its fine architectural detailing and brilliant coloring—the reds, blues, and yellows of the figures’ attire contrast beautifully with the pale stone tones of the building and the softly shaded sky. It captures both the grandeur of Lyon’s civic life and the elegance of Enlightenment-era urban design.
