A finely executed late 18th-century aquatint depicting the entrance to Rougemont Castle (Exeter Castle) in Devon, England, published on 29 September 1794 by Francis Jukes after a drawing by W. Davey. This atmospheric view captures the historic Norman gatehouse, originally constructed around 1068 following the Norman Conquest.
The composition presents a quiet approach toward the castle ruins, framed by a modest Georgian building on the left and a walled passage leading the eye toward the imposing arched gateway. The structure, built into the earlier Roman city walls, is rendered with careful attention to texture and architectural detail, emphasizing its age and layered history.
