Leonardus Marius Teaching in Interior – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
This finely executed 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Leonardus Marius (c. 1575–1652), a notable Dutch theologian, preacher, and author. Known for his pastoral work and clear, practical sermons, Marius was an influential figure in the Dutch Reformed Church during the early seventeenth century.
The scene shows Marius seated indoors, mid-discourse, gesturing as he teaches or offers spiritual guidance to a seated couple. His sober attire, composed demeanor, and the book resting on the table beside him reflect his identity as a man of learning and piety. The warm, domestic setting and soft coloring add a sense of intimacy and devotion to this portrayal, evoking the quiet moral authority of the period.
Drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850, this lithograph was produced with fine linework and subtle hand coloring, capturing the scholarly calm and instructional atmosphere.
