Jakob van Campen – Dutch Architect and Artist, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Jakob van Campen, one of the most important architects of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1596, Van Campen was a painter and architect best known as the designer of the Royal Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam, originally built as the city hall. He introduced classical architecture to the Netherlands and is regarded as a founding figure of Dutch Baroque architecture.
In this portrait, Van Campen is shown leaning casually against a block of stone on a construction site, holding architectural plans under his arm and wearing elegant yet practical clothing. Tools of his trade, including a measuring stick, trowel, and mallet, lie at his feet. His confident and relaxed pose suggests both intellect and creative authority. The background hints at a building under construction, reinforcing his role as a master builder and visionary.
The lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. The use of hand-coloring brings out the richness of his attire and the surrounding architectural elements, making this a compelling tribute to one of the Netherlands’ most influential cultural figures.
