A finely detailed mid-19th-century steel engraving depicting a street scene in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), centered around an ornate Ottoman fountain or gate structure. This elegant architectural composition captures the richness of everyday urban life in the Ottoman capital, combining refined decorative detail with lively human activity.
At the heart of the scene stands a richly ornamented public fountain, crowned with domed finials and intricate carvings typical of Ottoman civic architecture. Such fountains were important social and functional landmarks, serving both as sources of water and as gathering places within the city. Surrounding the structure, figures in traditional dress are engaged in daily routines—some resting in the shade, others passing through the street—bringing a strong narrative quality to the composition. To the right, pack animals and their handlers further emphasize the movement and rhythm of life within the city.
The engraving originates from Meyer’s Universum, the celebrated illustrated publication produced by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany during the mid-19th century.
