About this sheet
Yale College and the State House in New Haven, Connecticut, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen for Meyer's Die Fünf Welttheile dargestellt in Bild & Wort. The sheet is printed in black. The plate title reads "Yale College & State House, Newhaven, Connecticut", with the Hildburghausen imprint and the publisher's property line beneath.
The view looks along a broad, tree-shaded street across the green. At the left stand the plain brick buildings of the college, a row of three with cupolas and a church spire rising behind them. At the right, a Greek temple-form building with a columned portico is the State House, seen among large elms. Small figures walk along the road and a rider passes in the middle distance.
Yale was founded in 1701, and New Haven shared the role of Connecticut's capital with Hartford until 1875, which is why the college and the State House could be shown together as the town's two chief landmarks.
