Antique print titled 'Ile Birara, Nouvelle-Irlande'. Jewellery, belts and other items from Birara Islands, New Ireland. Illustrated are a feather ornament, a ring, a bracelet, headdresses, a shell necklace, a plaited straw belt, a Vaquois-leaf hat, a container for lime associated with the fruit of Melodinus scandens, and two wooden idols. This print originates from 'Voyage autour du monde exécuté par ordre du roi, sur la corvette de Sa Majesté, La Coquille, pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825 (..)' by Louis Isidore Duperrey.
Duperrey (1786-1865) was a French marine hydrographer, and the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
