Nova Belgica et Anglia Nova, Blaeu c.1642 – Early New York Map
This important and highly decorative map of the northeastern coast of North America is among the most attractive and historically significant depictions of the region produced in the 17th century. Engraved by Willem Blaeu and first issued in 1635, it is based primarily on the groundbreaking manuscript map of 1614 by the Dutch explorer and fur trader Adriaen Block, making it the first full printed representation derived from this pivotal source.
Block’s explorations between Cape Cod and Manhattan, including detailed surveys of bays, rivers, and coastal inlets, allowed for a far more accurate understanding of the region’s geography than had previously been available. His manuscript map is the first to depict Manhattan as an island and introduces some of the earliest recorded place names, including “Manhates,” “Niev Nederlandt,” and notably “Nieu Amsterdam,” here appearing among the earliest printed references to what would become New York.
The map reflects a significant advancement in the cartographic representation of the American coastline, particularly in its improved longitudinal scale. Although Block’s manuscript dates from 1614, the appearance of Blaeu’s map two decades later reflects the time required for such knowledge to circulate and be refined for publication. As noted by Burden, it is unlikely that Blaeu could have produced this map before circa 1630.
Beyond its geographic importance, the map is richly embellished with decorative and narrative elements. Animals such as beavers, otters, and polecats are depicted across the landscape—among the earliest appearances of such fauna on a printed map—highlighting the economic importance of the fur trade in the region. Additional features include sailing ships, compass roses, and an elaborate cartouche, all enhanced by original hand coloring.

Condition: Good condition with age-related toning. Original center fold as issued. Light discoloration and minor wear to the margins, consistent with age. Paper remains strong and stable. A well-preserved and attractive impression.
Framing tips: This map is ideally suited to a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or museum-white mat, allowing the fine engraving and decorative elements to stand out. Particularly effective in a study, office, or refined interior, and highly suitable for American or New York–focused spaces.
