About this sheet
Indiana in 1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago from their Improved Indexed Business Atlas and Shippers Guide. The sheet is printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red and blue, and the running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Indiana" runs up the right margin beside atlas page numbers 312 and 313.
The state is shown on an upright sheet, with its counties outlined and an unusually dense web of railroad lines. Many of them converge on Indianapolis at the center, where lines radiate in every direction like spokes. Chicago is lettered boldly at the top left corner on Lake Michigan, and the Ohio River forms the southern border, with the Wabash River crossing the western half. Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky are lettered at their edges.
The sheet shows Indiana as the Midwestern crossroads it had become by the late 1880s, with trunk lines running between Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville and St. Louis, and a close network of branch lines serving its farm towns.
