Original antique battle plan titled Plan de la Bataille de Marathon, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas accompanying Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Grèce by Abbé Jean-Jacques Barthélemy, published in Paris by Étienne Ledoux in 1825.
This finely engraved military map illustrates the famous Battle of Marathon, fought in 490 BC between the Athenians and the invading Persian forces. One of the most celebrated engagements of the Greco-Persian Wars, the battle marked a decisive victory for Athens and became a defining moment in the history of Classical Greece.
The map depicts the plain of Marathon in considerable detail, showing the coastline, marshes, mountains, roads, rivers, temples, settlements, and the positions of the opposing armies. An inset diagram illustrates the deployment of the Greek forces, identifying the various Athenian tribes that composed the battle line. Scale bars and numerous topographical details make this both an attractive historical engraving and an important military document.
Issued as part of Barthélemy's celebrated Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Grèce, the atlas combined historical scholarship with beautifully engraved maps and plans that brought the geography and history of the ancient world to life for nineteenth-century readers.
