This finely executed early nineteenth-century animal study depicts a sturdy farm horse standing quietly in a rustic rural setting. The print was created by the English artist Robert Hills (1769–1844) and published in London on January 1, 1801, as indicated by the inscription printed in the lower left margin: “London Published Jan 1. 1801 by R. Hills.”
Robert Hills was one of the most respected British animal artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He specialized in naturalistic studies of horses, cattle, sheep, and other farm animals, capturing them with remarkable anatomical accuracy and sensitivity.
