Original early 20th-century French fashion design depicting an assortment of fur pelts, bands and decorative trimmings intended for fashionable garments and accessories.
The composition is dominated by long cascading pelts rendered in contrasting shades of black, grey, cream and white. Beneath them are further studies of patterned and textured fur sections, arranged in overlapping layers to demonstrate the different materials available for collars, borders, cuffs and other fashionable garment trimmings.
The original French caption reads “Pelleteries diverses et bandes pour garnitures,” meaning “Various furs and bands for trimmings.”
The strong contrasts and almost abstract arrangement give the design a particularly decorative and graphic character. At the same time, the sheet provides an interesting record of French luxury fashion and accessory design during the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau period.
