Chinese Nobleman’s Study Interior – Ferrario Costume Print, Hand-Colored c.1815
This finely hand-coloured etching presents an elegant interior view of a Chinese nobleman’s study, offering a rare glimpse into the refined domestic environment as imagined through early nineteenth-century European ethnographic illustration. The composition carefully arranges furniture, decorative objects, and architectural elements to convey harmony, order, and scholarly sophistication. Hanging lanterns descend from above, while calligraphy scrolls, painted panels, and ornamental furnishings create a balanced and contemplative atmosphere associated with intellectual life and cultivated taste.
The print was produced by Luigi Rossi after designs prepared for Giulio Ferrario’s celebrated publication *Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli* (Costumes Ancient and Modern of All Peoples), issued in Milan circa 1815. Ferrario’s ambitious multi-volume work aimed to document the customs, interiors, dress, and cultural practices of societies around the world for a European audience fascinated by global cultures during the Enlightenment and early nineteenth century. Rather than depicting a specific historical location, the image represents an idealized scholarly interior assembled from travel accounts, artistic sources, and contemporary European interpretations of Chinese design.
The composition emphasizes decorative detail and symmetry. Elegant tables and stools are arranged with precision, porcelain vessels and scholarly objects rest upon stands, and painted wall panels featuring landscape motifs reinforce themes of balance and contemplation central to traditional Chinese aesthetics. The restrained palette and delicate hand colouring highlight architectural ornamentation without overwhelming the calm spatial arrangement. The engraving reflects the period’s fascination with Asian interiors, which strongly influenced European decorative arts and early chinoiserie design.
Individually coloured at the time of publication, each impression possesses subtle tonal variations that enhance its authenticity.
