Chinese Court Official with Attendant, Antique Hand-Colored Print 1815
This refined early 19th-century hand-colored engraving depicts a Chinese court official seated in conversation with an attendant, offering a composed and intimate view of imperial authority within a formal interior setting. The seated figure wears richly patterned robes and insignia denoting rank, while the standing official holds a scroll, suggesting governance, administration, or ceremonial protocol. The scene conveys hierarchy through posture, gesture, and costume rather than overt action, giving the image a calm yet authoritative presence.
The print was published in 1815 as part of Jules Ferrario’s monumental work Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, issued in Milan. Ferrario’s ambitious project documented the customs, dress, and social structures of cultures around the world, and his Chinese plates are among the most visually elegant of the series. Rather than presenting exotic spectacle, this image focuses on restraint, formality, and the visual language of power within the Qing court.
Executed as a copper engraving and finished with original hand coloring, the palette is subtle and harmonious, combining soft earth tones, muted greens, and restrained highlights. The vertical format and uncluttered background give the figures strong visual clarity, allowing the intricate textiles, accessories, and facial expressions to stand out. The composition reads almost like a painted genre scene, making it especially appealing as a standalone decorative work.
The sheet bears the original embossed blind stamp associated with Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, applied at the time of publication. This dry stamp is a characteristic feature of Ferrario’s Milan editions and serves as an important indicator of authenticity. As issued, the embossing may lightly overlap the image area.

Good antique condition. Light overall age toning with scattered foxing, primarily in the margins. Image remains strong and well preserved with fresh original hand coloring. Plate mark visible. Original publisher’s blind stamp present, as issued. Minor edge wear consistent with age.
Framing tips:
This vertical composition works particularly well with a generous ivory or warm parchment mat to emphasize the wide margins. A dark walnut, ebonized wood, or softly antiqued gilt frame will enhance the courtly character and suit both classic and contemporary interiors.
