This finely hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Imperial Hall of Audience in Beijing (Peking), China, and originates from Giulio Ferrario’s celebrated early nineteenth-century publication Il Costume Antico e Moderno (Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World), published in Florence, Italy, in 1815. Ferrario’s monumental work sought to document global cultures, architecture, and daily life through richly illustrated plates that combined scholarly research with refined artistic presentation. The engravings were intended both as ethnographic studies and as visual inspiration for European audiences fascinated by distant civilizations.
