This refined set of three hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 presents a graceful study of mountain and meadow flora. The plates depict Epilobium anagallidifolium (Greater Alpine Willow-herb), Epilobium alpinum (Lesser Alpine Willow-herb), and Œnothera biennis (Common Evening-Primrose). Together they form a visually balanced and botanically rich composition that contrasts the delicate alpine species of the north with the bold, luminous blooms of the Evening-Primrose.
The Greater Alpine Willow-herb, with its creeping root system and small upright stem, is shown with soft green leaves and pale pink buds—an elegant representation of a plant adapted to rocky, high-altitude soils. The Lesser Alpine Willow-herb is even smaller and more compact, spreading close to the ground with fine root detail and minute pinkish blossoms. In contrast, the Common Evening-Primrose displays robust stems, lush green leaves, and radiant yellow flowers that open at dusk, capturing the essence of late-summer meadows and gardens.
