This refined set of three original hand-colored botanical plates presents a harmonious study of wild carrot and related umbellifer species, arranged as a balanced horizontal trio ideal for interior display. The plates originate from English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, Third Edition, edited by John T. Boswell Syme and published in London by George Bell & Sons in 1902. Although issued in the early 20th century, the illustrations are based on the celebrated original drawings by James Sowerby and J.E. Sowerby, whose work defined the visual language of British botanical art for generations.
The three plates depict Great Hartwort (Tordylium maximum), Wild Carrot (Daucus carota), and Sea Carrot (Daucus carota var. gummifer), each shown with exceptional clarity. Fine engraved outlines are delicately hand-colored, highlighting the umbels, foliage, stems, and diagnostic botanical details with a restrained, natural palette. Condition report:
Very good antique condition. Light, even age toning to the paper, consistent with age. Minor scattered spots or faint marks may be present. Clean impressions with clear hand coloring. Plate marks visible where applicable.
