Hand-Colored Botanical Engravings of Yellow and Alpine Saxifrages, 1902
This fine trio of hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 features Saxifraga aizoides (Yellow Mountain Saxifrage), Saxifraga tridactylites (Rue-leaved Saxifrage), and Saxifraga rivularis (Alpine Brook Saxifrage). Each plate beautifully showcases the diversity of this hardy genus, known for thriving in mountain crevices, alpine meadows, and streamside habitats.
The first engraving, Saxifraga aizoides, depicts one of the most striking mountain saxifrages, with bright golden-yellow petals marked by red streaks and narrow, sharply serrated leaves. The artist captures the plant’s upright form and rich coloring with precision, emphasizing its alpine vigor and jewel-like beauty. In the center, Saxifraga tridactylites—the Rue-leaved Saxifrage—appears as a much smaller and more delicate species, its tiny, pinkish-tinged buds and slender stems rendered with great subtlety. The final image, Saxifraga rivularis, known as the Alpine Brook Saxifrage, shows a creeping plant with rounded, lobed leaves and fragile stems bearing white-veined blossoms, common along cold mountain streams and tundra slopes.
Together, the three engravings illustrate the remarkable adaptability of *Saxifraga* species across diverse alpine environments.
