This charming trio of hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 presents Saxifraga decipiens (Palmate-leaved Mossy Saxifrage), Saxifraga hirta var. incurvifolia (Irish Mossy Saxifrage, var. β), and Saxifraga rivularis (Alpine Brook Saxifrage). Each engraving captures the natural delicacy of these northern and alpine species, noted for their fine leaf divisions and soft, white flowers that brighten rocky slopes and damp meadows.
The first plate, Saxifraga decipiens, displays a compact rosette of deeply lobed, palmate leaves, from which a slender flowering stem rises, crowned with pure white blossoms accented by yellow and pink veining. This variety is among the most graceful of the mossy saxifrages, admired for its neat habit and decorative appeal. In the central plate, Saxifraga hirta var. incurvifolia, known as the Irish Mossy Saxifrage, shows similar dense leaf rosettes but with slightly curved foliage tips (“incurved leaves”), creating a more tufted appearance. The pale white flowers, each delicately veined, convey an understated alpine beauty. The final engraving, Saxifraga rivularis, illustrates a smaller, more delicate plant adapted to high mountain brooks, with finely divided leaves and a sparse, elegant flowering stem—a perfect study in simplicity and endurance.
