This graceful botanical set from 1902 features three detailed engravings of the French-Willow or Willowherb family (Epilobium), all hand-colored in delicate shades of rose and green. The plates illustrate Epilobium rosmarinifolium (Rosemary-leaved French-Willow), Epilobium angustifolium var. macrocarpum (Wild French-Willow), and Epilobium angustifolium var. brachycarpum (Garden French-Willow). Together, they capture the natural variation and elegance of this genus, known for its slender stems, elongated leaves, and bright magenta blossoms.
The first plate depicts the Rosemary-leaved French-Willow with its narrow, almost conifer-like foliage and pale pink flowers tinged with rose, revealing the fine precision of early botanical illustration. The central plate, showing the Wild French-Willow, presents a taller, more vigorous plant with vivid purple flowers and long seed pods, typical of meadows and riverbanks in summer. The final composition, Garden French-Willow, offers a fuller and more refined blossom form, carefully detailed with colored petals and partly outlined leaves that emphasize botanical structure and growth.
Each engraving shows meticulous attention to scientific and artistic detail, with floral dissections, seed capsules, and fine linework. The subtle coloring highlights the texture and character of the petals, making the set as suitable for study as it is for decorative display.
