Baroque Garden View Schwöbber, Volckamer Hesperides Engraving, 1708
This exceptional early 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a detailed and highly decorative view of the gardens and buildings of Schloss Schwöbber in Lower Saxony, Germany. Titled “Prospect der Gebäude in diesem Garten in Schwöbber,” the print originates from the rare first German edition of Johann Christoph Volckamer’s celebrated work Nürnbergische Hesperides, published in Nuremberg in 1708.
The composition is richly structured and divided into two complementary perspectives. The upper section offers a panoramic view of the estate set within a gently rolling landscape, with the manor buildings, church, and surrounding countryside rendered in fine detail. The lower section presents a formal garden layout in plan-like perspective, showcasing symmetrical parterres, avenues of trees, ornamental basins, and carefully arranged planting beds. Between the two views, a detailed engraved legend identifies the various architectural and horticultural elements, reflecting the precision and order characteristic of Baroque garden design.
Volckamer, a Nuremberg merchant and passionate botanist, created the Hesperides as a tribute to citrus cultivation in Europe. The work is renowned for its imaginative combination of botanical subjects with views of aristocratic estates and gardens. These engravings are particularly valued for their blend of scientific interest, landscape design, and decorative appeal, offering insight into early 18th-century garden culture and the prestige associated with cultivated estates.
