English Moths and Caterpillars on Oak and Bramble – Antique Insect Engraving, 1723
Published in London in 1723, this original hand-colored copper engraving forms part of Eleazar Albin’s seminal work A Natural History of English Insects, one of the earliest comprehensive studies of British entomology. The plate illustrates moths, caterpillars, and pupae shown in close association with their host plants, combining scientific observation with refined decorative balance.
The upper section depicts insects feeding on oak leaves, including a caterpillar shown in motion across the foliage, accompanied by adult moths presented in different poses. Below, a thorny bramble branch supports further stages of larval development, with serrated leaves rendered in soft green tones and highlighted with pale blue shading, a characteristic feature of Albin’s hand coloring. Together, the two compositions offer a clear visual account of metamorphosis across different host plants.
The plate is dedicated “To the Honorable Mrs Ann Somerset,” reflecting the network of aristocratic patrons and subscribers who supported natural history publishing in early 18th-century England. Such dedications provide valuable insight into the social context of Georgian scientific culture and enhance the historical significance of the engraving.
