This finely hand-colored copper engraving was published in London in 1720 as part of A Natural History of English Insects, the influential natural history publication by Eleazar Albin. Albin’s work is recognized as one of the earliest systematic English studies of insects, distinguished by its careful observation of species shown in relation to their host plants and across different stages of development.
The plate depicts a butterfly illustrated at successive phases of its life cycle, including the caterpillar actively feeding on a leafy branch, the suspended chrysalis, and the adult butterfly shown both with wings spread and at rest. The broad, serrated leaves form a strong botanical framework that anchors the composition, while the placement of the insects guides the viewer through the process of transformation. This method reflects Albin’s scientific intent: to document natural processes with clarity while maintaining a refined visual balance.
At the foot of the sheet appears the engraved dedication: “To John Philip Brayne of Dantzick M.D. & F.R.S. This Plate is humbly dedicated by Eleaz.r Albin.” John Philip Brayne was a physician and Fellow of the Royal Society, and his inclusion as dedicatee situates this plate firmly within the intellectual and scientific networks of the early Enlightenment. Such named dedications are an important feature of Albin’s work and add historical and scholarly significance that is highly valued by collectors.
