This finely hand-colored copper engraving was published in London in 1720 as part of A Natural History of English Insects, the celebrated entomological work by Eleazar Albin. Albin’s publication ranks among the most important early English insect studies, notable for its systematic depiction of insects in all stages of development and in close association with their host plants.

The plate presents several butterflies shown in multiple positions, emphasizing wing pattern and variation, together with a caterpillar feeding on narrow-leaved grasses. Unlike later, more stylized natural history illustrations, Albin’s approach is observational and restrained, aiming to document the insect’s form and life cycle with clarity rather than theatrical effect. The grasses are rendered with elegant simplicity, providing a natural setting that grounds the insects within their environment.

At the foot of the sheet appears the engraved dedication: “To Sr Hans Sloane Bar.t M.D. & F.R.S. This Plate is humbly Dedicated by Eleazar Albin.” Sir Hans Sloane was one of the most influential naturalists and collectors of the early Enlightenment and a central figure in the Royal Society. His collection later formed the foundation of the British Museum. Plates dedicated to Sloane are particularly desirable, as they directly link Albin’s work to the highest scientific circles of early 18th-century Britain.
