About this sheet
This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in color with gold, lettered "LE SABBAT DES VAUDOIS". It reproduces a page of an illuminated manuscript. In the arched miniature a crowd of men, with one woman in a white hood, gathers with joined hands and candles before a large white goat with long horns, three men kneeling at its feet, while demons and figures riding broomsticks fly through a starry night sky over a hilly landscape and a town with spires. Below the miniature is a block of gothic script opening with a large decorated initial. The whole page is framed by a dense border of blue, orange, gold and green acanthus scrolls and small flowers on a cream ground, with two gold roundels showing horned demons among groups of figures.
The running head reads "LE MOYEN AGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." at the left and "SCIENCES OCCULTES" at the right. Below the image are the credits "de Saint Germain del.", "Imp. Lemercier à Paris" and "Séré et Thurwanger lith.". The caption reads "LE SABBAT DES VAUDOIS, Miniature d'un ms. conservé à la Bibl. nat. de Paris." (The Sabbath of the Vaudois, miniature from a manuscript preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris), followed by "Fd. Séré direxit".
Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was edited by Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, with Ferdinand Séré directing the illustrations, and was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. Its chapters, written by a range of specialists, survey the arts, crafts, sciences and customs of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and its plates reproduce objects, manuscripts and buildings in public and private collections of the day. This plate comes from the fourth volume, of 1851, where it accompanies the section headed "Sciences Occultes" (occult sciences).
The plate can be framed on its own or hung with other plates from the work.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
