Fontainebleau Ballroom Consoles Engraving by Baltard after Primaticcio, 1803
This finely engraved original antique copperplate print illustrates a series of richly ornamented painted consoles from the Salle de Bal (Ballroom) of the Château de Fontainebleau. Arranged as eight individual decorative panels, the composition showcases an extraordinary variety of trophies, musical instruments, armor, fruit, drapery, and mythological ornaments inspired by the celebrated Renaissance decorations of the Fontainebleau School.
The decorative scheme was originally designed by the Italian Mannerist master Francesco Primaticcio (1504–1570), whose work transformed the royal palace of Fontainebleau into one of Europe's foremost centers of Renaissance art. This engraving faithfully records the elaborate painted decoration with remarkable precision, preserving details that remain of great importance to historians of architecture and decorative arts.
The plate was engraved by the distinguished French architect Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846) and published in Paris in 1803 as part of the monumental Napoleonic-era publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés. This celebrated work documented France's architectural heritage through measured drawings and masterfully executed copperplate engravings.
