This elegant engraved plate presents two contrasting views of ancient Egyptian ruins set within a broad desert landscape. The upper scene shows distant architectural remains rising from the arid terrain, animated by small staffage figures and animals that give scale and a sense of travel narrative. Below, a rock-cut tomb is depicted in closer view, its carved façade emerging from the hillside, with figures seated nearby to emphasise both monumentality and isolation.
The plate originates from an early nineteenth-century Egyptological publication produced in the immediate aftermath of the French expedition to Egypt.
