Original antique engraved view of Delphi and Mount Parnassus in Greece, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas accompanying Jean-Jacques Barthélemy’s Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce.
Titled “Vue de Delphes et des Deux Roches du Parnasse,” the engraving presents a dramatic reconstruction of ancient Delphi nestled beneath the towering twin rocks of Mount Parnassus.
The sacred settlement is depicted among a densely wooded mountainous landscape, with classical temples and buildings dramatically positioned beneath the monumental cliffs. A river and waterfall animate the foreground, where small figures provide a sense of scale to the impressive landscape.
Delphi was one of the most important religious centres of the ancient Greek world. Dedicated principally to Apollo, it was home to the celebrated Oracle of Delphi, where the Pythia delivered prophecies consulted by individuals and rulers from throughout the ancient Mediterranean.
The dramatic mountain setting was an essential part of Delphi’s identity. Located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the sanctuary was surrounded by a landscape regarded as sacred in Greek mythology and closely associated with Apollo and the Muses.
The finely engraved vegetation, rocky mountains, architecture, water and atmospheric sky make this one of the more decorative landscape views from the atlas.

Condition:
Good antique condition with general age toning, scattered foxing and occasional stains and marks. Foxing and discoloration are somewhat more pronounced in the lower margin. Minor age-related wear along the sheet edges. The engraved image remains strong, clear and highly detailed. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
